Mbooni project is a project of the Assumption sisters of the blessed virgin Mary of Nairobi situated in their own land in Kikima, kyavua of 1.34 acres which has a title deed.
The project has 4 titles: ASN Mbooni clinic (for bank details-KCB); Assumption sister’s mobile clinic (meds-ordering drugs); Assumption sister clinic (sub-county monthly reports); Maria Assumpta health center (in the signpost & booklets). This will be harmonized during the registration of the H/ facility which is in the process. Within ASN mbooni farm, we have the clinic, small shamba, and poultry.
HEALTH FACILITY
We offer outpatient services, laboratory services, ANC services, and child welfare services. The health facility is open from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, then on Saturday from 8 pm to 1 pm.
The building is semi-permanent; constructed with timber, cemented floor, and roofed with iron sheets. Currently, in the health facility, we have 5 staff members: 1 nurse, 1 lab technician, 1accountant, 1 patient attendant, and night security.
During rainy season varnishing of the timber is usually done to prevent water from entering inside the facility. The facility has 5 spacious rooms and a small store. There is enough land for expansion of the health facility.
Due to universal health care through free treatment in Makueni County, it has reduced the flow of clients thus affecting our income. Average clients we get per month: OPD Children 20; Adult 70; Antenatal 2 and CWC 60.
The monthly income of Mbooni project is roughly 90,000 – 100,000 per month. The clinic is not in a position to pay staff allowances; sisters allowances; run daily activities smoothly and make progress in the development of the land due to the low income. The clinic is not in a position to employ ground man so the staff and the sisters sacrifice to do the work. We have made local arrangements with the night security officer that in the morning he may leave duty at 8 am and resume duty at5.45pm, this is due to the insecurity of the place. The clinic is far from the nearby market and as a sign of motivation of the staff members, the clinic provides tea during break time and lunch which is prepared in the clinic by us.
SHAMBA
We plant maize, beans, sukumawiki, bananas & Passion fruits; Maize and Beans after valuing, they are consumed in the health facility. Sukuma wiki, bananas, and passion fruits are sold locally. We sell cashew nuts (macadamia) as a source of income. In the compound, we have planted trees that are a source of income and may be used for expansion of the health facility in the future.
POULTRY
We rear chicken for eggs and selling which also helps to improve the income of the project.
People from all over Mbooni County are appreciative of the services the h/facility offers. They appreciate the quality of care and humble time is given to them by the staff from reception, treatment until exit. Clients themselves also promote to others the services they have received from us and of the quality of medicines we have. Other clients seek health services from other facilities and when they don’t get cured flock to our facility either for treatment or for advice.
The health facility where it is situated is in a conducive environment and is relevant to the community. If laboratory services could be improved i.e. full haemogram machine; ultrasound it can attract many who go to Makueni and Machakos to obtain such investigations once ordered by physician.
